This is a guide I sometimes share with clients (if I feel they’d appreciate the humor).
Ah, yes – the joy of strange Scandinavian double-barrel surnames.
Thomas is pronounced with stress on the first syllable: ‘TOM-as’ (not ‘to-MAS’.)
As to the surname – well, there’s two ways of pronouncing it:
In DANISH, my mother tongue, it’s basically muddlemuddlemuddleBORG. Think about the Swedish chef from The Muppet Show for a second, then recognize the futility of even trying.
In ENGLISH, it’s a bit easier. Here’s a helpful graphic.
WE - is pronounced like the Wii, the Nintendo game console. This part is mostly mumbled.
DELL - is said like the computer brand Dell. That’s the part you should stress - “wiDELL”
After an artful pause, you say it again, only this time you add SPORK at the end. A spork, if you didn’t know, is the unholy union of a spoon and a fork: the dining utensil with the absolute least amount of dignity.
So that’s it: “TOM-as wiDELL wiDELL-SPORK”
That being said, feel free to mangle it any way you like.
